Shelter Services
Gannondale provides shelter care on an as needed basis in the open residential program. Gannondale is licensed to accept up to 12 youngsters in shelter care, dependent upon bed availability. When a youngster is placed in shelter, they will have a sleeping area separate from the general population, but will participate in other activities with the group. Every effort is made to achieve as normal an experience as possible given the transient nature of shelter care.
Crisis intervention services are available 24 hours a day, as staff are always present to meet the youngster’s immediate needs. Safety is vital and intense staff supervision is at the foundation of the program.
Specialized competency development curriculums have been developed that are geared specifically toward the needs of adolescent girls, with a goal to teach pro-social behavior. Shelter girls will participate in the curriculum which is currently running in the assigned unit.
Each youngster in shelter care will attend school in the non-secure program. The youngster is placed in a classroom as soon as possible, and will be given assignments commensurate with their age and ability.
The length of stay is also determined by the placing county. Transportation needs to and from court hearings, meetings, etc. are the responsibility of the placing agency. Frequency of family visitation/contact is to be determined by the placing agency. Transportation for visitation is to be arranged and paid for by the family or the placing agency.
